Weekend Getaway to New York

If you love the cold and want to experience the breathtaking beauty of Niagara Falls without breaking the bank, then you should plan your next weekend getaway to New York City. At Trient, we’re all about traveling in style, but even more so about traveling in style on a budget! We searched high and low for ways to explore this great city frugally and came up with some amazing ideas. So keep reading if you want to know how you can enjoy an unforgettable weekend getaway to New York City this winter season!

How we stayed there

If you are planning a trip to Niagara Falls, you can’t go wrong with the Sheraton on-the-falls. It’s easily accessible via a short walk, or take their free shuttle from anywhere else in town. The rooms are clean and spacious and we liked that our room overlooked both sides of Niagara falls . As for food, I didn’t get sick from anything , and was very happy with my trip! If you are planning on visiting Niagara Falls as well, here is some of what we did and some tips for how to make it affordable: Day 1: If you have never been , I recommend starting at Niagara Falls State Park (Includes all three waterfalls) We started off early at 9am so we wouldn’t have any lines whatsoever.

What we did there

The first thing we did was explore Niagara Falls State Park. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s very frugal. You can easily get away with paying less than $20 per person, and you can do many activities without spending any money at all. If you don’t have time for a full trip, I’d recommend staying nearby in Buffalo or Rochester and exploring both cities as well as their respective state parks. Even if you go into Canada, there are plenty of things to see and do on foot (or by boat). Oh! If your weekend isn’t too far from wintertime, consider visiting some of our nation’s most picturesque ski resorts. Most will offer lodging for well under $100 a night—but book early! There are also plenty of opportunities for skiing (and snowboarding) near Niagara Falls—but again, plan ahead!

Money-saving options

Don’t be put off by having a tight budget for your trip; there are loads of money-saving options out there. For example, if you have time available on your flight, use airline miles for free seats (if you don’t have any miles, it doesn’t hurt to ask). And remember that not all hotels charge in line with their star rating—you might be surprised at some of your options. Often, good deals can be found through travel websites like Expedia or Trivago or apps like Hotels Tonight; browse and bargain hunt online before booking anything directly. Last but not least: make sure you know how much your transportation is going to cost and factor that into your total trip budget as well. Happy travels!

Money saving tips while traveling

As someone who loves cold weather, spending a few days in Niagara Falls during winter was always on my bucket list. But if you’re thinking that I’m crazy for planning a trip there during such harsh weather, then let me just say I have no regrets! We don’t think of it often, but traveling is one of life’s luxuries. Since we all love traveling as much as we do, how about some money saving tips? Here are some simple ways for you to travel frugally and get good deals on flights or accommodations. Don’t want a weekend trip? Try something longer like an annual vacation! You won’t regret it. 🙂

Let’s start with hotels: Stay close to public transit. Hotels near airports are also usually very convenient . . . not only will it save you time from having to find parking, it’ll give you more flexibility with your day-to-day plans! Also avoid tourist traps; going slightly out of your way will help reduce your travel costs drastically (ex: going slightly west instead of east). Avoid high season pricing by avoiding summer months (excluding Hawaii) and try to go away during graduation/prior semesters so there isn’t many college students around which will increase price points.

Last tip – split hotel expenses with other family members/friends. For instance, splitting hotel rooms and renting a house might be cheaper than getting hotel rooms alone because that additional expense might eat up most of your allotted budget for a trip. One thing I didn’t include here is flight prices because I feel that everyone has their own method when it comes to budgeting for plane tickets or rideshare programs like Lyft & Uber, but they definitely can be considered travel expenses. So use those apps wherever possible (not sure what they are? ask Siri!) The fun part about taking photos while you’re traveling is showing them off on social media right after you’ve gotten back home. People really appreciate beautiful pictures of places they’ve never been before—so why not take advantage?
